Meditations & Mindfulness
Meditation was one of the things that helped me to eradicate my tumour and illness. I fully understand that not everybody can achieve that, but this is something that I did for myself. I feel that the mind is an amazing thing, but it can also be very damning at the same time. It’s like a computer. Give it the wrong input, programme, or direction, and it can mess it up.
Meditation and mindfulness is about stilling the monkey that sits on your shoulder, instructing you and telling you negative feedback. It will tell you you can’t do something or that you are not good enough. Meditation and mindfulness is a way to still that chatter. When you reinforce the same habit of talking to yourself, then you will only ever get more of the same. So, it is almost like taking a side step away from that and bringing in something else. Mindfulness and meditation is one of the ways to do that. It helps to build connection and a different way of talking to yourself, but like anything else it needs to be done daily to build the habit and the new way of being.
In my younger years, a lot of people used to come up to me and ask me if meditation was just sitting down, crossed legs, going ‘ommmm’. Which would make me laugh. Meditation is basically to still the mind chatter. You can do the ‘ommmm’ if you like, but it doesn’t always work. And like anything else, it is repetition, doing something over and over again to make change. So, in meditation, we focus on the breath, intention, and where our focus is.
When I helped myself, I used a meditation to help clarify and understand what had actually happened within my life. The way that I was taught was to focus on the breath by breathing in and out, watching that flow, and going with the flow of the breath. When people often do this, they do it for a moment and then they still say their head is talking. Your head will never be completely quiet or still. It is more learning about whether your head is reflecting or thinking: it is easy to get these mixed up. When I use the breath, I go with the breath and let all the chatter to come to a standstill. And then I let go of the breath and listen to the silence and in that stillness and silence, is normally when the understanding comes. This is about letting go, not directing or trying to look for an outcome, but to let the outcome come to you. It can take a lot of practice.
My very first meditation that I ever made is still available for you to purchase at the Shop. Meditation gave me a way forward, clarity, and understanding of what had happened in my life, but also where I was in my life. It helped me to bring that calm and stillness that is needed. If the mind is left to its own devices with its negative chatter and thought, it will keep going on in the same. It won’t change itself, but meditation gave me that left turn out of it, and it was a place that gave me answers.
